Nikon "Coolpix P1000" - 125x Optical Zoom!

A spy camera is pretty much any camera that the 'victim' isn't meant to see especailly when taking pictures of the victim. Don't cops use them for covert operations ? That depends on the situation requirements, but for most surveillance work you will find SLR/DSLR’s and consumer level zooms. There are budgets to be met. For specialized low light work nightvision scopes (there are quite a few available) with attached camera are used. https://www.pyleaudio.com/sku/PSHTCM88 -- Regards, Savageduck |

What on earth is a SPY CAMERA? https://petapixel.com/2018/08/06/thi...eid=b307a66a15 A "spy camera" would be a camera that could be secreted on person so that no one would know the person was capable of taking photographs. The common use would be to photograph documents, but there would be other uses. A camera with a long lens should more aptly be called a "surveillance camera" because it would be used to photograph the activities of people from a distance so the photographer would not be observed. -- Tony Cooper - Orlando, Florida |

Hence my earler reference to the Minox. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minox A camera with a long lens should more aptly be called a "surveillance camera" because it would be used to photograph the activities of people from a distance so the photographer would not be observed. Pretty much my agency’s usage for surveillance, as I said in an earler post in this sub-thread was historically SLR + consumer zoom, or single FL telephoto, and today DSLR + consumer zoo, or single FL telephoto, pretty much what the competent hobbyist would have used back in the day, just as it is today. In 25 years I never saw a decent telephoto, or zoom in use. Budget for agencies other than the FEDs, and management’s tolerance for purchase requests, dictate the level of photo-tech, and/or desirable camera tech available to most Local, and even State law enforcement agencies. Federal agencies operate a little differently. -- Regards, Savageduck |

Hence my earler reference to the Minox. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minox Minox didn't make just the miniature spy cameras. I have a Minox 35 PL that uses standard 35mm film. At the time I bought it, it was the best "pocket-sized" camera available. It had an external flash, but that's become lost. I carried it on business trips where I wanted a camera to photograph products. It was very useful at medical meetings where competitors were exhibiting new products. Or, when I made a trip to Zeiss NY where they were showing some not-yet-released product that I wanted to show my salesmen photos of. http://camerapedia.wikia.com/wiki/Minox_35_PL -- Tony Cooper - Orlando, Florida |

Our spy satellites all have them Just about the only thing I can think of which meets that definition is the old Minox, and that doesn’t have a 3,000mm lens. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minox -- PeterN |

Yeah, but...what do you think of the P1000? John I will try it when it's available, and buy it if there is not too much noise, or shutter lag. That thing's going to need some extraordinary IS. Or a tripod. Or high ISO capability, and extraordinary tracking ability. I suspect it will not be suitable for me, but I will give it a fair try. Without a tripod (or a pretty steady support, for a stationary target) it is going to be very difficult to use at full zoom. A gyro stabilizer might work too. https://luminous-landscape.com/kenyon-labs-gyro-stabilizer/ -- PeterN |

But I still suspect that many purchasers will expect to be able to use the full zoom handheld, only to be disappointed. Focus may be tricky too. That said, some people are going to get lucky shots. But the small sensor is the thing which would put me off. |
