quote snippage from M. O.'s reply. RAW images may still be
available - see thread.

Based on the results of using the demo units in the field, Canon may
make changes before the first production run. I took a series of
available-light test photos with it, using a color-check chart, mainly
to experiment with the resolution vs. S/N ratio tradeoffs it offers. The
5D-II can produce three different resolutions of RAW: 21Mpix,
10Mpix and 5.2Mpix. I wanted to see if its already very good noise
performance would improve at the 10Mpix resolution; I haven't
processed the RAW files yet, but the L-resolution and M-resolution
JPEGs which I have are indicating that luminance noise does improve
at medium resolution (which is 11Mpix for the JPEG). At ISO 6400,
it is comparable to, or slightly better than, my D3 in these tests.

FWIW a Japanese camera mag did ratings of all the top DSLRs including the 5D
II. Unfortunately my Japanese reading ability is poor, but it was clear that
they were not terribly enthusiatic, and rated the D3 higher in almost all
categories.
