Turned off computer, unplugged them, rebooted, turned off computer,

recovery useless, ended up full reinstall. Good thing real files are on
storage drives.
Still, takes about 2hrs to put apps, drivers back.

Rich, why don’t you post your Windows bitching, and stuff to a Windows NG
where it belongs, not to r.p.d. where it is off topic?

The last time you did this on October 8, the result was a major pollution of
296 OT posts in r.p.d., and your only post in the thread was the first one.

Is it not interesting how people who would never expect anyone to be
able use even a mildly complex camera effectively without at least
some level of understanding of how its system works will nevertheless
expect to use a computer and its operating system without bothering
with acquiring the slightest level of either expertise or even
understanding.

I agree in general, but DC/DVD drives are something photographers might
use, aren't they?

why would they? the capacity is too small to be useful, they're slow
and the ever growing stacks of discs quickly becomes unmanageable.

it's much easier, more flexible and *far* more convenient to use a nas.

The last time I used a CD/DVD for any sort of image file
sharing/archiving was over 15 years ago. The last time I used a Windows
machine was at work in February 2009, and then I retired.

The comments seem to be about archiving files, and that's not the only
purpose of using a CD or DVD. They are quite useful for sharing files
where you want to either mail the files to the other party or give the
other party a batch of files for the other party to view but not to
download.

There are other ways to do this, but that doesn't mean that there
aren't times a CD or DVD is a convenient way to go.

One grandson recently made a movie using my copy of Premier Elements
and burned six copies to discs for his friends and handed them out at
school. It was a very topical movie, so the friends will view and not
download and can share that disc with others.

It's like many other things: what we do, or don't do, personally
doesn't mean it isn't useful for others.

that never was a purpose of cd/dvds and those who chose to use them for
that purpose are in for some very unpleasant surprises.

but you are correct, there are other purposes. they make for great
coasters. they also are fun to microwave, just do it in a microwave
intended to be replaced. or, get a bunch of them for an interesting
halloween costume or do something for the community and build a
homeless shelter with them.

not anymore they aren't.

it's far more efficient and *much* faster to email or post online.

that was true long ago. not anymore.

the vast majority of computers in use today do not have an optical
drive of any sort and are physically incapable of using one, making
using a cd/dvd very *inconvenient* to use.

even for legacy computers with an optical drive, it's not as convenient
as clicking on a link.

what's with this aversion to downloading? the year is 2018 not 1998.

It's like many other things: what we do, or don't do, personally

odd definition of useful, but whatever floats your boat.
