Do you like the ADS enclosures?

bearing drives by Western Digital or Seagate) and putting them in ADS
Dual Link (both USB2 and 1394/firewire) enclosures for 3.5" and 2.5"
drives.

These enclosures have been superb, I have 9 so far with no problems.
Unlike many other enclosures, they have a small fan to help keep the
drive/power supply cool. But, they aren't cheap:

Exactly my experience, both with broken externals...and ADS enclosures.

As stated heat is a killer and fans are your friend. I've been all
over in the past with so called "engeneered" housings that didn't get
rid of enough heat and I ended up putting em in front of a small
window fan. I now use one of the 4 and 2 bay unit on this page:
http://www.cooldrives.com/firen.html Pricey but no problems. I will
say I only use em for storage for a short period of time and shut them
off till needed again. On occasion I've left em on for days with no
harm done. I just like to shut off things if not being used.

Good advice. I believe keeping an external device, that contains
back up files, plugged in
offers only a false sense of security. Will check out the Feeecom
drive.

I second that advice. I've got three double redundancy and unpluugged
drives off-site.

-Still beats the living heck out of CD-R or DVD back-ups!

I do both.

As long as it's connected to the pc it's not a secure back up.
