What am I missing ? latency. slrs have an optical viewfinder, which has zero latency. even the best digital camera has latency. it's short enough for most things but not all. Not being an expert, I assume latency is a slight delay. So then an SLR must have it's own latency while the mirror flips up ? the latency is in the viewfinder. with optical viewfinders, there is no latency (that can be measured). with digital viewfinders, the image has to be read out of the sensor, processed, then sent to the lcd display. that is *not* zero. it's short enough for most things, but not short enough for everything (and can be annoying). the mirror flip is also a latency, but with digital cameras, there is also a latency before taking a photo, where the sensor has to be flushed, the shutter closed, then opened/closed for the photo and then returned to viewfinder mode. some digital cameras are always recording and claim zero latency by using whatever image when you pressed the button. a few of them save images *before* you pressed the button, so you won't ever miss the magic moment. some create short videos leading up to the final image (live photos). |

You are missing the focussing problem. that too. slrs focus faster. It is only now that accurate and fast focussing does not necessarily require a device separate from the image sensor. Maybe they could have been combined sooner than they were but each problem has been sufficiently difficult on its own without complicating it with the other. it's still slower than an slr, although not an issue in most cases. |

The latency for film is the mechanical shutter. digital uses a mechanical shutter and film isn't the topic. |
