So... Seems there is no end to the cheating manufacturers now go to, to get better looking test results from the uninitiated. Fortunately some reviews are awake to their tricks at least. Trevor. |

So... I looked at it against the competition at 6400 and it looked good. It's got less noise at that ISO than the D800. It's amazing how effective noise reduction can be. You can apply noise reduction to the D800 file if you choose. With the K30 - you can't undo the noise reduction that's been applied in-camera to the raw file. |

You can apply noise reduction to the D800 file if you choose. With the K30 - you can't undo the noise reduction that's been applied in-camera to the raw file. Can it be turned off in the camera's settings? Looking at the manual, it has a "High-ISO NR" setting that can be set to Auto (default), Low, Medium, High, Custom (choose levels per ISO), or Off. Does the review say what settings they used? From DXOMark results "Off" isn't off. http://i48.tinypic.com/2hi9dv4.png That compared to D7000 Nikon, essentially the same sensor (sure there may still be minor differences) The plots track almost identically - as you'd expect, until ISO 1600, but then the "measured" s/n ration for the K30 is almost exactly the same at ISO3200 as ISO 1600. It's not possible unless they apply NR to raw files, even with high ISO NR set to off. DXOMark annotate the chart with "K30 - smoothed" at over ISO 1600. It's deliberate "cheating" IMO. I'm glad DXO nailed them. But Pentax sucked in RichA - and probably many others. There's also a Slow Shutter Speed NR setting which I think controls when and if it will automatically take and apply a dark frame after the shot. Settings: Auto (based on shutter, ISO, & internal temp.), On (any shot 1 sec or longer), or Off. (Wish my k20d had "Off".) IMHO, test shoots in general aught to include shots with the default settings, with all image enhancements off, and with settings optimized (perhaps by the manufacturer's pros) for maximum image quality for the shot in question. That would illustrate its out-of-the box performance, baseline image capture capabilities, and what-it-can-do. |

Pentax K30 has best low-light APS performance

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/pentax-k-30/19 .... if you read "performance" as "in JPEG: overly saturated and with less fine detail (look at the yellow feathers)", then you might be right. Oh, and it has less pixels, too ... so for a fair comparison you'd have to upscale its' image. -Wolfgang |
