300d vs 350d for action shots and low light
I recently bought a lightly used 300d. I've been pleased with the
results, but there are 2 gripes about it for the indoor and outdoor action photography I do. 1) Speed - faster 'on' would be a huge asset when photographing horses. Sometimes that moment you want to capture doesn't wait 1.5s. Does it really help you action photographers that much? 2) Noise - in low light, or high speed shutter situations this is a big challenge. Although I can mostly blame my inexperience, at ISO 800 and 1600 I would like better results. (Side question: would better quality lenses be a more significant improvement? - I'm using the 18-55 kit lens and 75-300 Tamron since I'm starting on a budget) I've heard the 350d is improved in these areas. I would appreciate any comments as to whether I would benefit noticeably if I sold the 300d now (while it's still in perfect shape) and upgraded to the 350d. Thanks, Dave |

Dave,
If you don't mind post-processing for getting rid of the noise, Neat Image does a good job. It would help with that budget you're starting. :-) http://www.neatimage.com/ -- John Tucker Integrity Web Design www.integrity-web-design.com David Geesaman wrote: I recently bought a lightly used 300d. Onlike P&S cameras that tend to have their screens on a lot, the 300D will not use much battery just sitting on. 2) Noise - in low light, or high speed shutter situations this is a big challenge. I bought a Mk I 50mm 1.8 to use in really low light, but so far I'm getting great results with the kit lens and running ISO 3200 (from the Russian hack). Then I post-process with Noise Ninja. Noise Ninja allows you to easily create a custom noise profile for your specific camera and lens at eash ISO setting, and when run with a custom profile does an amazing job. http://www.picturecode.com/index.htm I've heard the 350d is improved in these areas. Sure -- it does not do a full power off -- but it turns off everything which draws much power (the display, autofocus, that sort of thing), and it can last quite a long time just running the cameratop display -- and ready to spring to life at the half-press of a shutter button. And even when you turn it "off" with the switch around the button, it is still running a part of the cameratop display -- the remaining exposures count, and the sensors to tell when you remove or install a CF card, so it can update the count.
