No... a smartphone absolutely is a computer, some of which are more capable than what sits on people's desks. no they aren't unless you're main use of ya putter is facetime... :-ppp Whether or not a device is a computer has nothing to do with the use you put it to. sure it does. a modern autofocus camera lens has a microprocessor and firmware (which can be updated in some cases), but they are not considered to be a computer by any stretch of the imagination. Here is the nub of it "considered". "Considered" by who? Apparently by you. everyone other than you considers a camera lens to be a camera lens, not a computer. What a silly statement. Dedicated computers are embedded in all kinds of things ranging from GPS to engine management systems. they're not what is considered to be 'a computer'. Not so considered by whom? Whoever it is hasn't studied them very much. do you consider a tv remote control to be a computer because there is a microprocessor in there? Many of them have got a memory, they all have an input, a processor, an output. What's not to like? what about the keyboard you're using to type your posts? there's a microprocessor in there too. Yep. And it handles wifi communications as well. many other devices have microprocessors, including mice, trackpads, microwave ovens, washers, dryers, refrigerators, smartbulbs, thermostats, door locks, doorbells, garage door openers, smoke alarms, office phones, webcams, radios, tvs, traffic lights and much, much more. I remember the day that the same CPU was made to do duty for the computer and the connected printer. These days CPUs are so cheap that they can spread them around. a smartphone is basically a desktop computer in a very small package. embedded devices (e.g., lens, microwave oven, smart bulb, etc.) are *very* different. The question is, where do you draw the line? basically, embedded versus general purpose. it's also not a sharp line. Whose definition is that? the keyboard on your desk has a microprocessor and firmware inside it, but by itself, it's not considered to be a computer. Here we go again: "considered". Other people don't 'consider' a smartphone to be a computer. those people are sorely mistaken, or more likely, just ignorant. you're also avoiding the question. do you consider a keyboard to be a computer? When I consider the history of computers I would have to say that it contains a computer. be careful how you answer, because if you say yes, then apple released a multi-processor mac in 1984, using both motorola and intel processors. Why should that make me careful? Have you heard of the Ohio Scientific IIP computer which had 6800, 6502 and Z80 CPUs. And then there was OS Challenger 5 which had 6800, 6502, Z80, 68000 and Z8000 CPUs. long ago, apple released a firmware update for the ac power adapter used with powerbooks. nobody would consider a power adapter to be a computer. There is no point in continuing such an ill defined argument. that actually applies to your definition of computer, although i'd say absurd not ill defined. I haven't defined a computer. The nearest we have got to a definition is your "considered" for which you yet to give justification. nevertheless, there's nothing ill defined about the power adapter nor is it an argument. that power adapter had a microprocessor with firmware. it was actually an adb device (apple desktop bus) and could communicate with the computer. at one point, apple released a firmware update for it. this was in the early 1990s or so. apple's current magsafe power adapter communicates its maximum power capacity to the connected macbook so that its power budget can be adjusted accordingly and not overdrive the adapter. however, it's just an asic, not a full fledged cpu w/firmware. and by the way, the design of usb was based on adb. -- Regards, Eric Stevens |

Only the thick think they have cogs and wheels inside controlled by dwarves. You call dumb mobiles mobiles too, and they are also devices or computers if the smart ones are. All things considered anything that cant think by itself should be considered dumb. And a design ain't smart if you need a genius to get it working for ya! -- teleportation kills |

A 41 can replace those tables just as I wrote. I don't know if I can squeze the program into my 15c though... I might try one of these first: https://sextant-role.en.aptoide.com/ https://free-sextant.en.aptoide.com/ Download them and other apps directly into your smartphone Goog free: https://en.aptoide.com/installer Would you care to financially sponsor a replication of of the Heyerdahl Ra II expedition for me?
