Fine, but while the PDFs are in iTunes, they haven't made their way to
the iPad. I must have tried synchronising at least 7 times.

are they selected to be synced?

Yes

what exactly are you doing?

I'll get back to you on this. It may be at the heart of my problems.

I didn't recognise the name at first. From the very beginning, I've
been using iBooks for 2 iPad manuals and at least 12 books. They all
work, but the PDF section remains empty.

do they show up in the other sections?

What other sections? Alternatively, other sections of what?

I'm trying to add the manuals for my camera and my flashes to my iOS7

I've got the files into the iTunes library on my computer, but there
they sit. What do I do to get them into the iPad?

I have finally solved the problem, at least to the point that I have
got the PDFs I want into the iPad.

I would like to thank all those people who poked and prodded me in
different directions. It mightn't have seemed to have helped at the
time but it's that what got me there in the end.

I still can't drag and drop files into iTunes and have to use
drop-down menu item instead.

When chasing up iTunes and iPad software versions I found a switch in
iPad settings 'Sync Collections' which was off. I changed that to
'on'.

I had previously marked the 2 PDFs in iTunes for syncing but later
found that for some reason they had been unmarked. I changed them back
again.

Finally, although the iPad was tethered by a USB cable, I marked the
setting which allowed it to be synched by Wi Fi.

None of these things helped in the beginning but neither did the fact
that most of the time I didn't know what I was looking at or know
where all the various buttons and settings might lead me. For a long
time it seemed as though all iTunes wanted to do was sell me things.
This made it very hard to both understand what my problems were or to
describe them to others.

Now, not only have I downloaded the manuals for the D300 and the
SB600, but I have also installed the manual for the Canon G12 and the
Sigma macro flash. Life is wunnerful.

in the ibooks app, in the collections button.

on mine, i have several categories under collections, including books
and pdfs. some of them i created myself, such as ios, android and
others.

anyway, i want to know if the pdf is on the ipad and you can't get at
it (which means it's not itunes syncing) or if it didn't actually get
there and the problem is with itunes.

however, your other post indicates you figured it out.

that's good.

then there's something wrong with your system. itunes has supported
drag/drop forever.

When chasing up iTunes and iPad software versions I found a switch in
iPad settings 'Sync Collections' which was off. I changed that to
'on'.

that's for syncing changes across devices.

if you change the collection (category) of a book to another one, it
also moves it on your other devices. everything stays in sync.

I had previously marked the 2 PDFs in iTunes for syncing but later
found that for some reason they had been unmarked. I changed them back
again.

that could have been the problem.

wifi sync is a convenience, but it's not related to your issue.

None of these things helped in the beginning but neither did the fact
that most of the time I didn't know what I was looking at or know
where all the various buttons and settings might lead me. For a long

you can turn off the store.

not if you're stuck using a sigma product.

It's a good flash and at the time it was the only flash I could get
which would suit my 15mm macro. Just afterwards, Nikon brought out
their R1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System. I couldn't wait.

But Google says it doesn't work like that for a lot of
people. That includes me.

i don't know what you or anyone on google is doing. it works as i
described.

any file that itunes can handle can be dragged to itunes (which
includes pdfs) and it will automatically figure out what to do with the
file. there is no reason to manually add to library by digging through
the file system (but you can if you want to do it the hard way).

See https://discussions.apple.com/message/22109574#22109574 and
https://discussions.apple.com/message/23122492#23122492 as examples.

big deal. a couple of people doesn't mean it happens to everyone.

There are a lot like that. I don't know how many people it happens to
but it does show that I am neither alone nor making it up.

i didn't say you made it up.

however, it's not a widespread issue.

itunes has always supported drag/drop. it's a fundamental and natural
user interface action.

if it doesn't work on your system (or the above posters), then there's
something wrong.

Yep. The question is 'what?'

it's hard to tell from afar.

sigma flashes don't properly support nikon's ittl.

however, if you use it in non-ittl, it might be fine.

Why not make copies of the needed parts ans keep them in your pocket?

because it's 2014 not 1914 ;-)

At least you know the year.

The parts anyone would need to carry with them would be few - unless the
memory is very bad, in wnich case the camera might have been left
somewhere anyway.

because a *lot* more can live on an ipad, and a lot easier to use too.

My ipad is too big to go in my outfit case or any of my pockets.
