Default The biggest and most powerful ship in Royal Navy history.

HMS Queen Elizabeth has arrived in her home dock of Portsmouth yesterday
for the very first time.

She is the biggest and most powerful ship in Royal Navy history and
completely dwarfs previous flagships.

Thousands of people, including family members of those on board, lined
the seafront to welcome her home.

65,000-tonne carrier is largest warship ever to be built in UK and will
be Navy's flagship craft for 50 years.

The 920ft-long ship will undergo further tests in Portsmouth and will
not enter service until 2020

I've heard it won't get it's full compliment of aircraft until 2023 so
not quite so powerful yet.

[...]

It has been suggested that we could perhaps find a few 'Swordfish'
biplanes to keep her going meanwhile. They did excellent service all
through WWII.

The shot with it in the background and the town houses in the foreground is striking.

Yes, it is.

What does it say about our world when there are quite a few cruise ships
with three times the tonnage of this glorious a/c carrier?

Let's hope only the cruise ships will be needed for their intended purpose.

Both the QE2, and the P&O liner Canberra were used for service in the
Falklands War. The QE2 had the aft swimming pool covered with a heli-pad.
Another heli-pad was added to the fore-deck. Most of the public rooms and
lounges on the QE2 were converted to mass troop accomodation, officers and
NCOs got staterooms. Canberra had two heli-pads on her upper deck along with
equipment containers.

Then there were the various liners, such as the Cunard liners Queen Mary, and
Queen Elizabeth used for WWII troop transport service.

Ironically part of that complement will be US Marines flying F-35's and
US helos...

My guess is that there was as much poker and craps played on any one
trip, as on all the commercial cruises combined.

Well, OK I may be exaggerating.
OK I am happy to report that on the cruses I went on, I was luck enough
to play poker with guys who did not understand the game.
