I'm talking about a Windows help file, not a
webpage. And of course you don't know much of
anything about Windows.

Windows help is a CHM file, which is a compiled
package including HTML pages, images, CSS, index,
etc. It has nothing to do with browser settings.

A CHM file is rendered by an IE window but there's
no choice in how it's done. It's handled by the help
system. In other words, it's not renered in IE. It's
rendered in a special help window that uses an
IE browser sub-window to display the help content.

The problem was that the CSS inside the CHM
file is faulty. The technical details: The text area
was positioned in absolute terms but had no
positioned parent. That's like saying Oshkosh
is 6 miles east. It means nothing because we
don't know what it's 6 miles east of.

At least some versions of IE will not render the
text at all when that error occurs. Since I'm on
Windows I have no choice in the matter.

no need to leave the site. just open another tab/window and check. if
it's something done often, use a widget, or even easier, just ask
siri/google/cortana/alexa. bixby is still broken.

i use windows nearly every day, along with other systems.

surprisingly, fcu appeared wednesday and not the several months that cu
took.

it's still rendered, the same as had it not been 'compiled' (it's not
really compiled).

and let's not forget that chm is a microsoft proprietary format, and a
utterly horrible one at that.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Compiled_HTML_Help
Microsoft Compiled HTML Help is a Microsoft proprietary online help
format, consisting of a collection of HTML pages, an index and other
navigation tools. The files are compressed and deployed in a binary
format with the extension .CHM, for Compiled HTML. The format is
often used for software documentation.

Don't give up. You'll figure it out eventually.

But the only really relevant was that the
Photoline help file is faulty and someone should
have caught it.

i'm not the one who needs to figure it out.

chm is nothing more than 'compiled' html in a microsoft proprietary
format.

guess what you get when you 'uncompile' it.

here's a hint:

then pat yourself on the back for having found it.

did you tell them? did they agree it's a problem or did they explain
why you're so completely lost?

But, you've said "argue with the customer". Good salesmen say "It's
to your advantage to buy this instead of that, and here's why...".
That's not arguing.

I spent the last two years as a collage student taking my classes at
night, and working during the day. On one interview for a job as a sales
trainee, the sales manager asked me to sell hm a pencil. I said "not if
you don't need it. I was offered the job.
