I visit that site a bit, and never saw those notices. Where are they?

phil & simon post to the forums and i've bookmarked their posting
history page and peruse it every so often. below are some of the
posts, but i might not have found all of the relevant ones.

in what perhaps should have been posted on the main page, phil
discusses closing the old studio and moving to new space, along with
new staff:

studio finished 10/12/07, new staff started earlier in the month:

new names on reviews with simon introducing them (the second review was
just posted today):

Sheesh...

Why bury info in the forums where you can find it only by chance? Why not
let us know what's going on? Man, this is lame.

They could offer a lot more news than they do. All they concentrate
on is shilling equipment, that's it.

C'mon Dpreview, how long do you think your core audience of enthusiast
photogs will stick around if this keeps up?

Reviews people want, missing in action:
Olympus E-510
Olympus E-3 (well, we know what happened there)
Canon 40D
Canon 1DMkIII
Nikon D300 and D3 (may not be avail)
Pentax K100D Super
Samsung G10X
Panasonic DMC-L10
Sony A700 (May not be available)
Sigma SD14

Here, I'll give ya the Readers Digest version.

Canon 40D: GREAT!
Canon 1DMKIII: Same as 40D but costs lots more.
Nikon, Sony, and all the rest: SUCK!

Any questions?

I think he failed to realise how selling his site to Amazon would
change how it is perceived, not only by photographers, but by camera
manufacturers and their representatives.

For example, he may not have expected any significant changes in the
profile of payments by the site's sponsors.

Olympus does not sponsor DPReview. Given their difficult relationship
in the past, Olympus obviously sees no reason to do DPReview any
favours when providing pre-production samples of new cameras.

I'll be curious to see how the new owner's of that site affect the editorial
content based on advertising. Normally, I don't trust magazines or sites
that derive advertising revenue from the manufacturers whose products
they're reviewing.

It's all over the site. There were at least a dozen threads where it
cropped up after Phil Askey started a thread to respond to all the
fools like Rich.

Sorry, but burying info in forum threads does not constitute a good transfer
of info. Maybe, just maybe Phil could have placed in a "news" article. Those
of us who don't read every thread might have been curious.

The ones who wondered where all the reviews have gone. I think they
replaced them with ads.

And now that the site is totally polluted with ads, can we trust the
reviews? Probably, but I'm not liking the changes since Amazon bought them.

The editorial content has long been biased according to which
manufacturers sponsor the site and which don't.

I am not sure how you would identify any changes in bias due to
changes in advertising. For example, you can be pretty sure that
manufacturers who feel they have had a raw deal on a web site in the
past are not going to spend their advertising dollars there. Why feed
the hand that smites you? (if you see what I mean)

I would be interested in having someone tell me what is an
"entry-level" camera. The dpreview says " the Olympus 510 is an
entry-level digital SLR that is the "big brother" to the E-410
which I recently reviewed. For an additional $100, the E-510
offers all of the things that made the E-410 impressive (and, in
some cases, not impressive) and throws in image stabilization, a
larger grip, better battery life, and more."

Surely the E410 would be the *entry* level!

It seems like some manufacturers are now coming out with
"pre-entry-level" D-SLRs. It's all about price points and de-featuring.

T It's kinda like a "starter home" - it's a vague-specific tag
T that has more to do with the price-point than anything else.
T Entry-level DSLRs are in the $1000 price range.

It sounds like a piece of salesman's snobbery! That is, you
would have bought a better (ie. more expensive) one if you could
have afforded it! Like you only bought a $100K Jaguar car when
you are aspiring to a quarter million Bentley :-)

T I would argue *both* are entry-level cameras.

"entry level" = cheapest (in a particular range)

Perhaps a word people don't like to use!
