It seems as if everyone is trying to squeeze the last pixel out of the
sensors, but then the cameras are almost universally sold with zoom
lenses.

My experience has always been that prime lenses provide better detail
and color than zoom lenses.

And, if the average DSLR buyer uses a single wide-range zoom, it seems
silly to pay the extra cost of the removeable lens design.

Something doesn't quite compute here - what am I overlooking?

Zoom lens used to be inferior and some still are. But, the best zoom
lenses of today blow away a majority of the primes of yesteryear. Here
is my lens make up (pre digital) Nikon 20 AFD 2.8 (fast, razor sharp
and inexpensive when compared to a similar zoom n this range), Nikon
28-85 3.5/4.5 AF Zoom (the early version, all round pretty good lens.. stays
on the film camera all the time), 55m 3.5 Micro P (I like this lens.),
Nikon 70-300 4.5/5.6 ED AF-D (light weight, very good performance
except at extreme end.). Nikon 105 F4 Micro.... great old manual micro
lens, sweet, Nikon 80-200 AF-D (razor sharp, yummy, but weighs a lot....
an awful lot) and with digital we added the Nikon 18-70 AF-DX. I use
the primes when I need the special services they provide, otherwise I opt
for the convenience of the zooms..... I don't want to be changing lens
every second, it can be the difference between a great photo and no
photo. Note I have multiple zooms and change them all the time. It was
a tough enough to cough up the 1000 bucks for the 8/200 when I bought
it, but at least I new I would use that lens a lot. Coughing up the 450
bucks for the 20mm 2.8 was harder, because I knew it would be used
rarely.. And that is the reason most people buy zooms.. you will use it a lot
unlike some prime which may give great photos but is priced high for the
few times it will be used.
