How can you travel to a remote, far away place with just *one* lens?

Answer: because with FF everything is so bulky and heavy that you have
to leave the other lenses at home.

$2000 for the a7R III, $2300 for the Sony 16-35 f/2.8, and the travel
expenses to the Maldives left little room in his wallet for additional
overpriced Sony glass. However he did say that he needed this lens as it was
the only wide-angle he had with him. That leads one to believe that he had
other, or at least one other lens which was not a wide-ange. Moreover, in
France which Pierre Lambert calls home I don’t believe there are too many
bargains on any cameras, let alone any Sony FF at the height of their
popularity.

Actually that would be 3000 Euro for the a7R III and 2400 Euro for the
16-35 F2.8 on this side of the ocean. Total 5400 Euro which equals 6200
USD.
Can you really get the a7R III and the 16-35 f/2.8 for just 4300 USD in
the USA? That's dirt cheap compared to European prices.

The numbers I wrote were a guestimate based on what I have read.

After a check with B&H.

a7R III body only $2998.00

FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM - $2198.00

Total: $5,196.00 or 4,509 Euro

Was that Tax-in on the US side?

Add typical VAT to your Euro price (20%): €5410.

But US sales taxes would be far less...

B&H does not add NY sales tax to out of state orders.

They do charge for foreign shipping.

Add typical VAT to your Euro price (20%): €5410.

That is going to be unavoidable even if ordered for B&H for a Euro sale.

But US sales taxes would be far less...

Here in California sales tax ranges from 7% to 8.25% Use tax* depending on
location.

however, they will be adding local sales tax for 15 states, starting
tomorrow, for a total of 22 states by the end of the year.

order the camera & lenses today. you know you want it, even though
california is not currently listed.

On the heels of June's Supreme Court ruling allowing states to
collect sales tax on online purchases from out-of-state sellers that
do not have a physical presence in the state, B&H Photo, an Apple
authorized reseller, will begin collecting sales tax in 15 additional
states starting the week of Oct. 8.
....
Which 15 states will appear during the first round of additions
remains to be seen; however, the total list of states in which B&H
will collect sales tax by year's end will include AL, CO, CT, HI, IL,
IN, KY, MD, ME, MI, MN, MS, NC, ND, NJ, NY OK, SC, SD, VT, WA
and WI. This is after the Supreme Court ruled five to four in the
South Dakota v. Wayfair case.

If I order both items there for shipment to Germany the total becomes
USD 6626 because you have to add 1371 USD in duties & tax. Then it's
cheaper if I buy them here (6200 USD only).

Seems that in the USA you have lower duties & tax.
