Dynamic range of digital and film: more data
Hi.
I've got a lot more information up on my dynamic range page. I've extended the intensity range to about 10 stops, and include images from film and digital to show image detail and how, in particular, film loses the shadow detail before digital. I also include information on jpeg versus 12-bit raw and resulting 8-bit jpeg posterization effects. While print film shows about 7 stops dynamic range, Fujichrome Velvia slide film shows only 5 stops, but the Canon 1D Mark II shows over 10 stops. Even jpegs show lower noise and larger dynamic range than film. I also show that the digital camera has a transfer function similar to that for print film.
