Manual focus but auto exposure lenses for Nikon D40

I don't mind having to manually focus AF lenses, but I find their focusing rings to be a little thin and loose. Are there any Manual focus lenses that have electronic aperture control? If I use a completely manual lens I guess I will have to shoot in complete manual mode, adjust speed and aperture on the camera until exposure is correct, then stop down the lens aperture before taking the shot. Is that right? I think what you might be looking for is the Nikon 45mm f/2.8P "pancake" lens. This is manual focus but has the computer chip for automated exposure functions. This lens was introduced with the FM3A but has been discontinued. You can find them on ebay etc. but they're rather pricey. Manual focussing with the D40 is greatly facilitated by using the aftermarket "Katz Eye" screen. |

You are looking for a lens with an AI-P designation. They were built towards the end of the 80s. Or an even older AI lens (from 1977 onward) with an added chip which effectively converts it to a AI-P. jue |

Just a handfull of specialty pro oddballs beside that like 500mm f/4 P and PC-Micro 85mm f/2.8 D. People used to splice chips and electrical contacts into old lenses but that's uncommon. This lens was introduced with the FM3A but has been discontinued. You can find them on ebay etc. but they're rather pricey.
