Not much, they're held in place by the heating element. When I
received the cpe2, most of them were out of place. When I put them
back in, there was no sign of any type of glue on them or in the tub.

My CPE-2 is very old (perhaps 1981). Perhaps they glued them in for a while,
and stopped after they noticed the heating element could hold them in. It
does not appear from mine that omitting the glue would be all that great an
idea, but it might save a penny or two worth of epoxy, a minute or two of
time to apply the glue, and a couple of hours waiting for the glue to dry.

I've had good luck with "earthquake wax," found in art supply stores,
and used to stick small objects to shelves and so keep them from
falling over in a shake. The stuff seems unaffected by water, and holds
the ceramic rings fairly well, though quite reversibly.
