OK then, please advise the shape of the sensor !

Since the field of the lens projected image on the sensor is obviously
circular, I assume the sensor is a square with corners near the edge
of the circle, to get the most information.

Someone else suggested it might be 4:3 but I don't know.

If it's a square, then each side would have the square root of 18.2 MP
or 4266 P in each direction, and is each pixel really actually 3, or 1
for each color, RGB ?

you assume wrong. people prefer rectangular aspect ratios, therefore
it's rectangular.

Someone else suggested it might be 4:3 but I don't know.

easy to tell from the specs:
https://www.dpreview.com/products/sony/compacts/sony_dschx80

its resolution is 4896 x 3672 pixels, which is 1.33x wider than it is
tall, or an aspect ratio of 4:3.

If it's a square, then each side would have the square root of 18.2 MP
or 4266 P in each direction, and is each pixel really actually 3, or 1
for each color, RGB ?

nope. it uses a bayer filter, as does almost every camera, which has
nothing to do with the shape of the sensor or its field of view.

No, YOU'RE wrong !

Yes, the prefered aspect ratios are : 3:2 for prints. 4:3 for normal
TV, and 16:9 for computer and wide TV, but that says nothing about the
aspect ratio of the sensor which, as I said, is probably square, to
maximize the potential info gathered by the sensor.

If it was rectagular, then Sony would be throwing away top and bottom
picture info. And what then would the aspect ratio of the sensor be ?

On the other hand, the "1" aspect ratio does appear to just be a side
cropping of one of the others.

because it's rectangular.

Just where in the specs does it say anything about the aspect ratio of
the sensor ?! Surely if it was rectangular, and it might well be, it
would give the aspect ratio. All it says is 1/2.3 ", which is a bit
less tham 1/2 " . If it was rectangular, then one dimension wouldn't
be enough to completely specify, further sugesting a square.
