Default A Change to the National Park Photo & Video Permit Rule

It seems the permit requirement for photography & videography/filmmakers in the National Parks has been lifted.

https://youtu.be/nvJRgGle9wU

....but drone take off, landing, and operation is still illegal in the National Parks. The operation wording means you can’t take off outside a park and then fly into and over the park.

In fact it's hard to understand why people would need a permit
to take pictures in a national park.

For What It's Worth: the ban was on /commercial/ videography and
photography. According to the blog Duck linked, the ruling only
affects commercial videography. The law* dates to 2000. Here's the
National Park Service's take on it:

https://www.nps.gov/aboutus/news/com...to-permits.htm

* According to the posted ruling, "...the permitting requirements imposed
on commercial filming by 54 U.S.C. § 100905 and its implementing
regulations, 43 C.F.R. Part 5 and 36 C.F.R. § 5.5." If anybody's
interested in reading the federalese:

https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/43/part-5
https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/36/5.5

Ruling was found at:

Ansel Adams work would likely have never happened had this been in-place then. The ultimate goal of the nature loons is that most people are prohibited from entering national parks and that they be preserved for the animals and a few elitist environmentalists.

So...it was a good thing that Adams was employed by the US to take
photos of our National Parks.

For his entire portfolio? I doubt it.

The US provided him steady employment through the 1930’s and most of the 1940’s.He even maintained a studio in Yosemite NP. Some of his more noted work was his documentation of the internment camp at Manzanar, in the Eastern Sierras. Then in the 50’s & 60’s he switched from view camera to Hasselblad sponsorship, and started making money.

But then it would have been the other way round: the (few)
professional photographers are allowed in and may take photos,
the masses are locked out. Instead it appears the pros needed a
permit to take pictures, while the masses didn't.

Adams wasn't swimming in money, even in later years, even paying a permit fee might have been beyond his means. People pay for a permit when they do commercial work, which helps to pay for the park upkeep and they also get to use or the presumption is they'll be using more elaborate or disruptive equipment in their work. For example; you can't use a tripod with a camera as an amateur in a shooting in a subway but can shoot for free, but you can if you are a professional with a permit.

Not too many photographers were shooting in the National Parks in quite the same way as Adams.

For his entire portfolio? I doubt it.

A significant portion of "his portfolio" that involved the National
Parks was paid work. He was obviously still taking photos after his
decades of employment by the US ended. So what?

Not anywhere as much as some of his original prints.
