Default Shallow DOF

Here is an image taken with the new Sony A1:

https://drive.google.com/drive/folde...8Ra_KmOoMQAJdp
OkxXCsf0?fbclid=IwAR1F8P9jrWxh-
DfcKRjHbQDUKzg7z2Fzw6BIscaIz7gfkpEE78Yi3NVxzDo

DOF is razor-thin (far too thin): one of the eyes is in focus,
the other not. The image looks weird. Would have been better if
the entire face was in focus.

Surely DOF depends on camera settings (like aperture)?

Agreed!
It is obvious that for whatever reason the photographer shot those images wide open resulting with that shallow DOF. It would have been interesting to know which lens was used and to have the full exposure metadata, but that seems to have been striped. The actual resolution delivered is quite impressive.

The facial shot with its asymmetric focus due to the shallow DOF does appear awkward with the right side of her face, and the jewelry in sharp focus, and the left side, including her shoulder too soft. I guess it is an image which might work on a glossy fashion magazine, and that might be the intention.

The same can be said for the shot of the fox. These shots seem to be more a demonstration of the characteristics of the lens, rather than a demonstration of the A1.

If nothing else, it proves that the AF is accurate.

It's also a good camera and lens. But they should have stopped
down that lens.
