actually you *should* go by what most people think. that's how language
works. otherwise, there will be mass confusion.

Uniformity, that's the key. Line uo, fowaaaard march. Screw inovation,
to hell with change. Most people haven't done it.

Technical language has to be precise and has to remain precise. That's
why the medical profession has continued to use latin for so many
years.

This was not a technical point.
Latin sit proprium Lombardie
ut convenit mortuis
Necavit primum Romanos
tunc Necavit magistris
Nunc necat

English belongs to Lombardy
that belongs to the dead
It killed the Romans first
Then they killed teachers
now kills ... what?

In any case, we were discusing a technical topic and there was need to
be clear about what we were talking.

Doesn't that first line translate as:
"Latin belongs to Lombardy"

I'm sure you are right. I just cut and pasted from Google.

Which shows the fault in most machine translation. The back trnslation
is all too often ridiculious.

This was not a technical point.
English belongs to Lombardy
that belongs to the dead
It killed the Romans first
Then they killed teachers
now kills

Nec hoc interdicto dicendum habeas.
Anglicus proprium Lombardie
quod pertineret ad mortuis
Necavit primum Romani
Haec trucidatis doctores
nunc occidit

Nor does this decision.
The Englishman to Lombardy
that belonged to the dead
It killed the Romans
This cut teachers
now killed

Nec in suos decision.
Anglus in Galliam misere
quae peculiaris fuit Ioannis mortuis
Necavit Romanos
Sectionis huius doctores
interemtus

Neither in his decision.
Englishman in Lombardy
that belonged to the dead?
it killed the Romans
Sections of teachers
interemtus

... and so on.

However, that does not make sense considering your original Latin quote was:
" Latin sit proprium Lombardie
ut convenit mortuis
Necavit primum Romanos
tunc Necavit magistris
Nunc necat"

Here is what Google does with your quote:

Umm... not my quote, but your original. Just goes to show you can't
trust Google in all things.

English belongs to Lombardy
that belongs to the dead
It killed the Romans first
Then they killed teachers
Now kills "

Anglicus proprium Lombardie
quod pertineret ad mortuis
Necavit primum Romani
Haec trucidatis doctores
Nunc occidit "

The Englishman to Lombardy
that belonged to the dead
It killed the Romans
This cut teachers
Now kills "

etc etc

So, Google just compounds its mess.

Not a single "Anglicus" to be found. Even if "Anglicus" were correct it
makes even less sense considering the English had little to do with
Lombardy until the grand tours of the Victorian upper class after
Napoleon left town.

Lombardy was originally Etruscan, and then Lombard. So why "English",
they had nothing to do with the region other than as tourists?

....and so, why "English" when it is so obviously the wrong translation
of "Latin"?
