Entry level body with spot metering?

Pentax mz-5N and Nikon F601 have caught my eye. Any recommeddations? Opinions?

The mz-5n can be aquired quite cheaply, as it's an older model now. I
have one and quite like it's performance. It also has depth-of-field
preview, and selectable metering (matrix or narrow). Same for
auto-focusing.

The TTL flash works nicely too, as you can vary the amount of
fill-flash (undocumented - see my web site for an article on it).

The F601 (N6006 in the USA only) has a very complex user interface. I
found it almost impossible to get used to, and quickly sold it. I
replaced it with an F801s (N8008s) which has an outstanding user
interface; I still rate it as one of the best SLRs I have ever used.
The F801s has spot metering, the previous F801 (N8008) does not.

The Pentax MZ-5n is a very competent camera. It has traditional
controls, which work well, excellent metering and AF systems.

You should also consider Canon and Minolta.

Your choice also should be based on the lens systems offered by each
brand, rather than just the camera body. Each of the 'big four'
manufacturers has a lens range that is distinctly different from the
others in at least one respect.

Research the lenses, choose the brand, only then choose a body.

It is the lenses that make the pictures, not the camera.

IIRC (AID) entry level Canon SLRs have "partial" as opposed to "spot"
metering.
