I have an ist-DS and the QR plate from my tripod at hand. The thread in the tripod socket on the Pentas ist-DS is like most cameras today, a 1/4" BSW. I don't know where the other posters on this thread got their info, but it's quite surprising the range and bizarre ideas some of them have come up with. The other responses are a problem of different methods of describing the same thing and partly a desire to differ on any subject. You mention a 1/4" BSW (which has 20 threads per inch) screw. This is correct. Also a 1/4-20 screw was mentioned. This is also correct. If you go to a hardware store a 1/4" diameter screw with 20 threads per inch is a 1/4-20 screw. One joker then had to disagree by mentioning a 2/8th inch screw with 80 threads per 4". 2/8" is the same thing as 1/4". 20 threads per inch is the same thing as 80 threads per 4". So all the responses are the same thing. Now with tripod mount screws there are two standard threads in common use. A 1/4" screw (which is a 1/4-20 screw that is about 1/4" long) and a 3/8" screw (which is 3/8-20 I believe and also 1/4" long). So when the OP asked what screw the Pentax camera uses, the answer can be "a 1/4" screw" or "a 1/4-20 screw" and be correct. In either case you are indicating that it is not a 3/8" tripod screw. Randy It can't be a "1/4" screw", because that says nothing about the diameter or thread pitch. It might be a 1/4-20 x 1/4", though. Or even a 1/4" 1/4-20. Go into a hardware store, and ask for a 1/4" screw, and be prepared to be asked what type of 1/4" screw you want. -- THIS IS A SIG LINE; NOT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY! Al Gore's son was pulled over by police on the San Diego Freeway Tuesday with marijuana, Valium, Xanax and Vicodin on him. The kid never had a chance. He got hooked on downers at an early age listening to his father read him bedtime stories. |

Pentax *ist-D Tripod Screw?

snip for brevity It can't be a "1/4" screw", because that says nothing about the diameter or thread pitch. Also, you might get a 1/4" wood screw. Not much good for attaching a camera to a tripod at all. It might be a 1/4-20 x 1/4", though. Or even a 1/4" 1/4-20. Go into a hardware store, and ask for a 1/4" screw, and be prepared to be asked what type of 1/4" screw you want. The safest thing to ask for is a 1/4" BSW (or UNC, the difference is minimal for a tripod mount hole) machine screw or bolt. A machine screw is a better idea (either slot, phillips or posidrive head), as you can use an ordinary screwdriver to fasten it instead of a spanner that's required for a bolt (which have a hexagonal head). |
