Default Nikon 5400 question

Well, I'm really pleased with my D100 but I want to get a compact for my
wife to have at school, and me to put in my shirt pocket occasionally. Am
looking at the 5400 because:

1) it has an accessory shoe for external flash and is compatible with my
Nikon flash (SB80dx) and other flash accessories.

2) 4mp is fine for the anticipated use.

3) optical viewfinder for battery conservation

4) uses same memory card as my D100, I suspect the formatting is compatible
too.

5) rebate

I consider #1 and #3 to be the most important features for me. I'd like
a minimum of 4mp but 3 might be sufficient.

But, what is the lag time between pressing the shutter button and actually
capturing the photo? I have gotten very spoiled with the D100's virtual
zero lag time. I was always frustrated with the lag time in my old Sony
DCR.

And, of all the other brands of compact digital p&s cameras out there that
have the above features, do any have a zero lag time?

Does the lag time decrease when using the optical viewfinder as opposed to
the screen?

I'll probably be getting over to the camera shop next week to look at them
closer but just wanted to see if I could get some candid information here
first.

thanks

Ralph

Having spent Christmas day snapping photos of my nieces and nephews, I
can say it's pretty bad. If you're snapping shots of kids on the move, I
wouldn't even bother with the red eye filter.

This is the worst feature of Nikon consumer cameras IMHO.

Hope that helped,

Andrew
