If you want America to look like this again ...

"America" didn't look like that then. Only the poorest parts of some large
cities did. And by the way most of those immigrants were damn glad to be
here instead of back in their hometowns in Europe. In a generation or two
with hard work and enterprise they were much better off than if they'd
stayed on the other side of the pond.

Note, Bruce, that a couple of readers in England said the pictures look a
lot like LONDON in the same period.

VOTE REPUBLICAN!

;-)

It's one or the other; that's democracy for you. It's the DEMOCRATS who are
mostly responsible for the economic mess we (and part of the rest of the
world) are in today, and it's our DEMOCRAT president who is driving us ever
deeper in debt -- he's now demanding ANOTHER $1.2 TRILLION, and we are
already so far over our heads in debt we will never be able to pay it except
by printing more dollars, making them more worthless than they have are
already.

Would Republicans be "better"? Yes, in the sense that emphysema is better
than lung cancer.

Again: that's democracy for you. As soon as the people learn they can vote
themselves the treasury, what follows is inevitable.

A bald-faced lie.

It's the harsh truth, and all the Democrats' truckloads of bull**** cannot
cover it over. DEMOCRAT Jimmy Carter (arguably our most inept president)
gave us the Community Reinvestment Act, and DEMOCRAT Bill Clinton greatly
expanded that (the law had been mostly ignored from 1977) to start coercing
banks and other lending institutions to give mortgages to millions of poor
people, especially minorities, who would never be able to make the payments
on them. Even people on welfare with no other source of legitimate income
were given loans to buy houses, often with no down payment at all. These
were the so-called NINJA loans (no income, no job or assets).

Predictably, this started the great housing boom and skyrocketing prices. As
long as prices kept rising no one cared much if borrowers defaulted on their
loans, since a house foreclosed on could always be resold at a still higher
price.

George W. Bush warned about the risks of this situation his first year in
office, and John McCain along with several other senators (but NO DEMOCRATS)
tried to get better regulation of these high-risk lending practices in 2003.
They were blocked by the DEMOCRATS in Congress, especially Chris Dodd and
Barney Frank (both of whom have now decided this is a good year to retire
from Congress), who insisted there was nothing to worry about and
Republicans were (in Frank's words) "making a mountain out of a molehill."
Frank kept repeating that everything was fine, nothing to worry about --

Then the housing bubble burst, starting about 2006, and it all started to
come apart. By 2007-08 the "subprime lending crisis" was in full swing.
Because of the way so much of this bad debt had been repackaged and sold to
investors everywhere, the damage was by no means limited to the housing
market but had spread to every part of the economy. Banks began to fail. The
largest ("too big to fail") lending institutions were theatened with failure
and one of them, Lehman Bros., did fail. Others had to be saved by massive
government bailouts. Jobs were lost by the thousands and finally by the
millions. There is a domino effect: as fewer people are employed, spending
is reduced and therefore businesses are badly hurt, leading to more people
losing their jobs.

The important thing to remember is that it all started with the massive
amounts of high-risk subprime lending. ALL of it. If not for that, we would
not be in the mess we are now, with actual unemployment about 18-20% (the
official current figure of 8.5% is known to grossly understate the case, as
it does not include the millions who have used up all their unemployment
benefits and/or given up looking for work).

It's the harsh truth,

You're a liar, fascist turd. And you know it because you omitted all
of the evidence I supplied showing that you're a liar.

From 2001 to 2009 the Republicans DOUBLED federal spending, DOUBLED
the national debt, created the biggest deficits in US history, and
left America in the worst recession in 80 years.

Those are objective, irrefutable facts, fascist turd.

As did you, FishHead Rot. That wasn't 'evidence', btw, just heresay.

From 2001 to 2009 the Republicans DOUBLED federal spending, DOUBLED

So you're saying that Republicans controlled both houses during all of that
time, you friggin' nutjob?!?

Those are objective, irrefutable facts, fascist turd.

"Bull****" is your middle name, FishRot.

Can't you two ever conduct your "arguments" with at least a trace of civility
or wit? The same puerile insults, endlessly repeated, are pretty monotonous.

Or are the two of you actually just one person, reflexively trolling for
attention every time a thread mentions U.S. politics?

Answer my OUESTION,

Run along, rightard. You can't cope with the truth so you do your
best to change the subject and obfuscate. Bigots like you always find
some excuse to lie.

I am tired of right-wing bigots lying their asses off in order to
justify fascism. Why aren't YOU offended at being lied to by the
right wing?

You should be tolerant Bob. Linguistic ability is clearly limited in
both cases.
