why? are microdrives heavier on batteries than solid state CF cards?

The main reason for me getting a large capacity card isn't do do hundres of
shots in one 'sesson' but more like to be able to not have to take my
lap-top with me wherever I go

Yes, they have motors and other bits. I can fill a 4GB card on a single
charge, shooting raw. It's always sensible to have a spare battery though.
The battery life of the A2 is excellent.

That's true, but I haven't noticed any significant difference in shots
per battery charge between my 4 GB microdrive and my 1 GB SanDisk CF.

I can fill a 4GB card on a single charge, shooting raw.

Interesting, I don't get anywhere near that. The best I can do is
about 1/2 full on a single battery. And that's with no LCD use,
anti-shake set to exposure-only mode, and being pretty careful to shut
off the camera when not in use (between shot sequences).

YMMV, I guess.
