Default The OPEN AS does not work in my Photoshop Elements 6.0

Just downloaded and installed a "trial" copy of Photoshop Elements
6.0 . Much to my disappointment the OPEN AS does not work; and, of
couse, the Adobe Help Documentation is nearly worthless. If I try to
open a jpg (created in CS2) as a PSD file, I get the error msg that it
is not a Photoshop Document. When I try to open a jpg as a Photoshop
RAW, I get a message block on the screen entitled Describing [File
Name], with blank image height and width and number of channels equal
1. Apparently, the OPEN AS cannot decipher the image data from the
image file. From things that I have read, the OPEN AS should
immediately convert the image and I should not be getting any
messages.

From my preliminary tests, I have not found any files that do not open
correctly as themselves (jpg to jpg, raw to raw, psd to psd).

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

I think you have misunderderstood the purpose of "Open
As...". It isn't magic, it's just a way to tell PS to ignore
the assumed file type implied by the file extension and/or
MIME and "just do it".

As a trivial example you could rename a JPEG file by
changing its extension to (say) .txt, then select the
resultant "text" file (which you know is in reality a JPEG)
and tell PS to open it as a JPEG.

that sounds like it's working properly. you can't simply take a jpeg
file and open it as a totally different format. it's a jpeg, not a psd
document.

if you want to convert a file from jpeg to psd (or any other
combination), open the file normally, then do a save as... and select
the desired format.

When I try to open a jpg as a Photoshop
RAW, I get a message block on the screen entitled Describing [File
Name], with blank image height and width and number of channels equal

that also sounds like it's working properly. photoshop raw is nothing
more than directly reading the raw data (not to be confused with camera
raw). you need to tell it the width and height and other pertinent
information so it can interpret the image data.

Apparently, the OPEN AS cannot decipher the image data from the
image file. From things that I have read, the OPEN AS should
immediately convert the image and I should not be getting any

what did you read that said that? it doesn't convert anything. if the
file type is unknown, you can force it to be what you think it is, but
if it's something else, it won't work at all.

From my preliminary tests, I have not found any files that do not open
correctly as themselves (jpg to jpg, raw to raw, psd to psd).

that sounds right.

Ah, is that what he meant? I was totally confused - never seen that before!
