they named it the d500 because it's essentially a d5-dx, just like the
d300 was to the d3.

that's the only reason it's a d500. otherwise, it would have had a 4
digit number.

Not quite.
Consider D510, D520, D530, D540, D550, D560, D570, D580, D590. Then throw in
at least three suffix letters such as S, R, T, and they could update the D5xx
every 18 months for 45 years.

No, they're not. Just put them on a kitchen scale and poder your
findings...

it's not a spin. the d500 is clearly a much more capable camera than
the d7200 and should have a higher number, but since it's a d5-lite,
calling it a d500 makes more sense than following the pattern.
