I'd like to ask a favor...a small survey for another newsgroup that I
frequent. If some replies come in, I'll explain the reason later. Please reach in your pocket and pull out all of the change there and tell me how much silver you have in your pocket right now. Not the denominations or the breakdown...just the total amount. Nothing else. Thanks. -- Tony Cooper Orlando, FL |

Nothing else. Thanks. None - for a couple of reasons. 1. I'm sitting in pocketless gymshorts, ergo have no pockets with change. or (the answer you're looking for). 2. None. Instructions said to pull *ALL* of my change out of my pocket. Therefore I have no silver (or any other change) in my "pocket right now". Wait - you probably wanted the answer, but not the explanation. Sorry |

I think if you'd simply explain a bit you'd get more takers. Otherwise, it comes accross as some sort of set-up line... |

Right now, just after reading the instructions, you have whatever change there is in your pocket. You won't have nothing in your pocket until you follow the instructions and pull it out. So I would say the common sense answer would be correct. Gary Eickmeier Hi Tony Hi TMG Are you guys lost? |

Right now, just after reading the instructions, you have whatever change there is in your pocket. No - you're holding the change that *WAS* in your pocket. The *CURRENT* count of change *in* your pocket, after following the instructions to remove all Change from your pocket is *NULL*. DELETE from pocket where cointype = 'Change' SELECT from pocket where cointype = 'Change' returns 0 rows Comment: of course, you just deleted all the Change. Took that set out of the pocket (first instruction). There is no Change in your pocket. SELECT from pocket where cointype = 'Change' AND color = 'Silver' returns 0 rows Comment: Since there are no longer any matches for 'Change' in pocket (following the first instruction to remove all Change from pocket), the subset of 'Silver' clearly returns NULL. There is no Change in your pocket, much less Silver change. SUM 'Silver' returns NULL Hi TMG Are you guys lost? I got diverted via someone posting nonsense to usenet. That and I'm actually into digital photog. Good to see you here. And you got here.....? |
