I know this isn't the place to post, but are there some
newsgroups for this?

Thanks,

Larry Jones

I don't think there are rules against this as nobody could enforce
them, It's not a private forum, but I think proper form would be to
post with a header that states FS: WTB: WTT: etc. so those that wish to
filter this material can. What do you have for sale? I might need it!

There certainly are rules against it, dummy. The group for selling LF is
rec.photo.marketplace.large-format

Hmmm.... I seem to remember somebody getting sharply
criticized for posting "for sale" stuff. But, here goes (he

You and your friend who suggested that this was Okay are to sit in the
corner and use your newsreader until you find the marketplace group.

The rec.photo newsgroups are part of Usenet and have
formal charters. Alt groups do not have charters. The
charters for the rec.photo news groups forbid advertising in
the discussion groups. However, there is a set of classified
groups especially for posting advertising by _individuals_
but not dealers or other commercial operations. These are
also covered by charters. These groups are the
rec.photo.marketplace groups. rec.photo.marketplace was the
original group and is a catch-all for things which don't fit
the catagories of the other groups. Those groups follow
approximately the equipment groups.
The decision to forbid advertising in the discussion
groups was reached several years ago when these groups were
re-organized. Originally advertising was allowed but it
began to dominate the groups blocking out the discussion,
which was the original purpose.
The single marketplace group was expanded to a set of
groups several years ago to make it easier to both buy and
sell specialty items.
Advertising is effective in these groups because people
know to go there to look for stuff.

The problem is those groups don't have high traffic, so it's hard to sell
there, and the people selling there are typically wanting more than the
market will bear (as evinced by Ebay), so I just sell on Ebay and buy from
reputable used dealers such as KEH or try my luck at Ebay, which has worked
out to my advantage on most occasions. (Just don't be in a hurry buying on
ebay.) As a result, I seldom (never) bother posting to the marketplace
groups any more.
Dummy. ;-)
