San Francisco Trip - Photo Recommendations
I'm trying to plan a trip to San Francisco around the end of June.
Anyone have recommendations on things/places to look at and things/places to avoid? Thanks, Jim |

Don't spend more than a couple hours at Fisherman's Wharf. Check out the murals in the Mission District, explore the alleys, it's safe. North Beach, Telegraph Hill & Chinatown are cool, lots of hidden neighborhoods as well. Check out the book 'Stairway Walks in San Francisco'. Bring comfortable walking shoes and warm clothes in layers, it's cold in the summer. Ocean Beach sucks but check out the hang gliders at Fort Funston and Baker Beach or even China Beach, Point Bonita Lighthouse and the Marin Headlands. Skip Alcatraz, take a ferry to Sausalito instead & walk up along the waterfront way past the tourist section, get one of the slow ferries not the new ones. Drive to the top of Twin Peaks if the fog ever clears for the view. Take one of the old the F Trains up Market to the Castro for a movie instead of a cable car. Sunday brunch in the Haight then walk up through Cole Valley, over Tank Hill, down the Pemberton Steps, Kite Hill, Dolores Park & down to Valencia. Hike to the top of Bernal Hill too. Inner Sunset near Golden Gate Park then up to Grand View Park, Clement street in the Richmond district for Dim Sum. Walk up Edgehill Mountain. http://www.edgehill.net/1/?SC=go.php&DIR=California/Bay-Area/San-Francisco |

Thanks, Jim The most obvious suggestion is the Golden Gate Bridge. Here is list of the vista points where you might want to shoot it from. I especially recommend the view from the Marin Headlands. http://gocalifornia.about.com/cs/san...ggbridge_2.htm Another nice view is the Dutch windmill at the Western edge of Golden Gate Park. Not to mention the Japanese Tea Garden, Conservatory of Flowers, and all the other sights in the park to numerous to mention right now. http://www.sfgate.com/traveler/guide...s/ggpark.shtml The Palace of Fine Arts is another good place to visit as well. http://www.nps.gov/prsf/places/palace.htm If you get a chance you should catch a Giants game. The views of the bay from AT&T Park make it the best looking stadium in Major League Baseball. They will be playing the LA Dodgers, the Oakland A's, and the Texas Rangers at home the last two weeks of June. Best bet for you is the Rangers, because I'm sure the A's and Dodgers games are already sold out. http://sanfrancisco.giants.mib.com For one last piece of advice I'll quote Mark Twain, "The coldest winter I ever experienced was a summer in San Francisco." So carry a sweater or warm jacket with you during your stay. The calendar may say June, but it can really get chilly when the fog rolls in from the ocean. ALV |

"JimKramer" wrote in message ups.com... I'm trying to plan a trip to San Francisco around the end of June. Anyone have recommendations on things/places to look at and things/places to avoid? Thanks, Jim Ride all three cable car lines from one end to the other....Walk across the Golden Gate Bridge. Go to the top of Coit tower, and the top of Portrero Hill at the South end of the city. Go to Golden Gate Park, and to the solarium there where they have the neat tropical plants and flowers. Walk along the beach and take a picture or two of the Cliff House, and post it here. (I haven't seen it for ten years now) Go to the zoo if it's summertime, and send me a picture of the musk oxen.....I am lonesome for them, too.....Spend most of your money on food in the many fine restaurants.....Le Bougerie, and the Pacific Cafe on Geary street. and Scoma's on Fishermen's Wharf.....I wish I could go with you. |

They have rebuilt the Cliff House a number of times over the years, due to earthquake and/or fire damage, but this last is the worst yet....It looks like the Lincoln Memorial! - Is this a joke? If not, then I take back what I said about taking some pictures of it for me.....I was talking about San Francisco scenery, not Washington DC scenery....... |

It has no character, no relationship to the surrounding area. |

It has no character, no relationship to the surrounding area. It does appear to be closer in architecture to the original, fwiw. Lots of good suggestions. If you are drawn to Lombard Street (the very curvy little block of said street, walk up it from Coit tower and then catch a cable car down Hyde Street to the Maritime Museum. .... The Wharf is just to the East, if you are so inclined; I'd recommend a crab sandwich on the sidewalk rather than a sitdown experience, unless it's Scoma's.... Enjoy. -- John McWilliams |
