"I can't AFFORD the D3x but I desperately want it!"

Understandable. The D3x is going to sell just fine, even at $7000-$8000

And at that price, how many does Nikon need to sell? I guess they
figured that there are just enough techno-addict suckers to pay the
costs.

I think they are going to take a LOT of people who were looking at the
entry level Hasselblads at around 15K USD

True Professional cameras are not judged on how much they cost but on
how long they will keep making money for the owner. There are still some
photographers using Olympus E1 cameras.

Any working Pro who contemplates buying a camera has different criteria
for deciding which to buy than "techno-addicts" as you call them. Nikon
don't have a history like Canon do in changing minor specs and releasing
the same camera with a different number.

If they do introduce a cheaper version, you can be sure it will be just
that, a cheaper version, not the same thing disguised. The Digital back
cameras like Mamiya and Hassy are studio cameras. The D3x is a field camera.

None of those are considered Professional cameras.

They are not quite the same camera. The D70s has a larger display.
Apart from that they are identical and the D70 firmware could be
upgraded to D70s specificaton.

D2x - D2xs
D40 - D40x - D60
D3 - D3x

A whopping change in resolution is a change in a minor spec?

I do - I do!
If I owned a D2x/s or D3/x, then the humour could have been "at my
expense", and I would be crying.
