Fashion work generally does not require quality lenses.

Since there are many successful fashion photographers using both
systems you'd think what's important is the photographer, not which
system he/she chose.

There is not much difference for that specific application as far as the
optical performance is concerned. It depends on how fast you can shoot
with either one and which brand you generally prefer. The square images
of the HB have some advantage if your shots are more the portrait type
shots and the rectangular ones are more practical for full body shots
and similar ones.

Since fashion is usually printed in magazines or other rectangular
formats you'll be cropping 6x6 to 645
anyway. 6x7 doesn't need much cropping at all so would probably produce
better quality in these situations due to less enlargement.

A hassy will be easeir to handhold than an RZ/RB though.

He is asking Hasselblad vs. Mamiya, not which format.
If you don't know yet, you can use the A16 back in the V body that
takes 6x4.5 image.
Besides, the H series is 6x4.5 in nature.

Back to the original question.
I think the traditional argument on this matter, about the optical
performance, the cost, and the convenience, is going to be shifted to
give more room in consideration of the digital adaptation.
From that matter, the Hasselblad might have a little edge in the high

end digital back, due to the merge of one of the best digital back
supplier. Its H1 series lenses, and body construction is very much the
same style and quality of the typical Japanese MF cameras. I see no
compeling reasons why Hasselblad H1 would be better or worse than the
Mamya 645AF.

So the decision should be focused on the digital back related issues.
However, Hasselblad is yet to deliver the real beef. Before that, there
is no much to count. There is only expectation.

The A16 is a horizontal format, is it not? It's difficult to hold the 'blad
sideways.

It's not.
You just need a 90 degree prism. As you do with all 6x4.5 cameras.
