The main reason we live here is our lifestyle. We are about 20 minutes

Tanglewood, A long weekend trip to ME, close, but not too close to
Atlantic City & the CT casinos, and about a six hour drive to various
other places we like to visit for a few days.

Spent my time in many a line at the state DMV office in Hauppague as a
teen. I still have family around the area so usually get up there
several times a year. Lots of various activities/places as you note.

If you plan to drive down this way for your trip you might consider
the coastal route. NJTP to Rt 1 and then Rt 113 in Del to Rt 13 at the
Md/Va border and over the CBBT. Assateague Il is 15 min off Rt 113
and there is a bird sanctuary right before the CBBT on the eastern
shore of Va. I try to plan stops at each for at least one leg of a my
trips to NY/LI. The sanctuary can be really hit or miss but it is just
a quick stop a couple miles off Rt 13.

After typing this I want to say I remember you mentioning the back
road towns on the Eastern Shore in a past post, so you probably are
aware of all the above.

Yep. We really like the drive down the Eastern shore on the Delmarva
peninsula. We have also taken the ferry from Cape May. It takes a lot
longer, but the object is the journey, not the destination.

I'm wanting to do the ferry ride one day. Unfortunately, in my case so
far the destination has been the pressing issue for the most part.
Back in the late 70s I rode the bus to Norfolk many times while an
undergrad. I'm still somewhat traumatized by the one ride that hit all
the small towns down the eastern shore on a 14+ hour bus ride.

The Cape May-Lewes ferry is a decent detour well worth taking. The last
time I took that ride was back in 1985. I need to take a trip back East
sometime soon.
I also remember having a great scallop meal at a restaurant out in the
Chesapeake Bay Bridge on that trip.

On one trip the ferry slowed down so we could all see some dolphins.

At first I thought that restaurant was a tourist trap. I was wrong. :-)

When we were much younger, it was a day-long event to get a car registered
at the DMV offices on Long Island. You stood on one line to get the form to
fill out, then another after you filled out the form for it to be checked,
then another after it was approved to pay for the registration, then another
to pay for the plates, then another to pay the sales tax. It was a horror.

My time was the mid-70s. The local offices were always so bad I went
to the state office in Hauppauge most of the time.

My time was around the same time as yours, I got my junior license in 1977,
my senior license in 1978 when I turned 18. Hauppauge was, by far, the
better location. I lived in Brentwood which is close to Hauppauge but
closer to Bay Shore. The DMV office in Bay Shore was a miserable place to
be.
