Uh, so, yeah - the words "successor" and "replacement" aren't synonyms. Nospam is correct that nothing can *replace* the D400, since there never was a D400. There could, however, be a D300S *successor*, which of course needn't have anything to do with a hypothetical D400. -- Sandman |

This is a good example of one word, no matter how seemingly insignificant, can change meaning. If Android had written "Is all hope for a D400 replacement gone?" it would have been understood to mean a replacement for the D300s if it was in the context of a discussion about what Nikon will offer as a replacement for the D300s. There was some talk that Nikon would replace the D300s with a model called the D400. It never came to fruition. The word "replacement", in the context of the model following the D300s, is perfectly acceptable. "Successor" would also be acceptable. I was writing on that slippery iTab thingy... Soo sorry! ;-/ -- teleportation kills |

If Android had written "Is all hope for a D400 replacement gone?" it would have been understood to mean a replacement for the D300s if it was in the context of a discussion about what Nikon will offer as a replacement for the D300s. nope. there was never a d400 so there never can be a replacement or a successor for it. it's obvious what he meant (d300s successor), but this newsgroup loves to nitpick on spelling, phrasing and word choice. There was some talk that Nikon would replace the D300s with a model called the D400. It never came to fruition. actually it did, but since nikon changed their naming nomenclature several years ago, it was called the d7000 and d600 (they split the model into two), followed by the d7100 and d610. rumour has it that the d7200 is coming soon. The word "replacement", in the context of the model following the D300s, is perfectly acceptable. "Successor" would also be acceptable. for the d300s, sure, and that has been out for years as well as *its* successors. however, it's not acceptable for a non-existent d400. |

You are so intent with arguing that you are not reading. "...a model called the D400" never came to fruition. you're the one who isn't reading and you snipped the part where i explained what happened, completely misrepresenting what i said so that you can argue. again, it wasn't called the d400 because nikon changed how it names cameras and because they split it into two models, one a little lower spec (d7000) and one a little higher spec (d600). |
