On a scale of 1 - 5 this site rated it 0.65. Not even good for snapshots. If
you want decent photographs you will need to buy decent lenses. http://www.photozone.de/active/survey/querylenstxt.jsp?filter=%22brand='Canon%20EF'%20OR %20brand='Sigma%20AF'%20OR%20brand='Tamron%20AF'%2 0or%20brand='Tokina%20AF'%20or%20brand='Vivitar%20 AF'%22 Marten "GVR" wrote in message ... I looked at the Tamron and Sigma 18-200 lenses when they first hit the market. I found the Sigma to be marginally better than the Tamron. It had better build quality, seemed sharper overall with less chromatic aboration. Here are a few photos taken with the Sigma 18-200 on a Digital Rebel: http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2.../CRW_7166a.jpg http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2.../CRW_7101a.jpg http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2.../CRW_6901a.jpg http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2.../IMG_5966a.jpg http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2.../CRW_7000a.jpg Some like to trash the 18-200 lenses but I have found the Sigma to a good trade off between convenience, versatility and decent quality photographs. I look at the Sigma 18-200 as my Swiss Army knife lens. It isn't always my first choice but for a day of shooting where I don't want to be burdened by a bag full of gear it is indispensable. Plus the great range of this lens has allowed me to get shots I would have missed if I took the time to swap lenses. Sometimes it is better to get a good to very good shot, technically speaking, than getting no shot at all. |

Thanks Gustavo Hi Gustavo. Last time I looked at _very_wide_zooms, they weren't best for quality or maximum aperture. I'd love to think that time and technology have made a change. An 18 - 200mm would save a lot of weight and space in my camera bag. Regards, Ian. |

Here are a couple of photos as requested. http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...s/IMG_6396.jpg http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...s/IMG_5975.jpg The 18mm shot is at 4.0 instead of 3.5 though. I couldn't find one in the archives that was wide open at 18mm. For me the performance at 18mm wide open isn't an issue. I have better lenses for wide angle, wide open, low light circumstances. In a pinch though the Sigma 18-200 can be manipulated to get a fairly decent low light shot with, or without, a flash. Like I said, it is a Swiss Army knife type of lens. Shooting in decent light though it works very well for an 11X zoom which is the reason I bought it. |

I have the Tamron 18-200mm lens. It's not that bad. I have used it at more
than a few wedding receptions, usually on my second camera. I don't like the fact that zoomed in the maximum aperture is 6.3. My cheapie Nikon 70-300mmG gives a brighter and I think slightly sharper image. Still, the 18-200mm range comes in handy. Of course the Nikon 18-200mmVR would be far superior. I never tried the Sigma. "GVR" wrote in message ...
