The other one is more artistic and, I believe, a better picture. But this one
fits the mandate ("Wide") for the September SI. Be sure to submit it!

What is that exactly?

Yes, but they're interesting at any age. That's why parents and grandparents
have to be capable photographers.

My fifth and last grandchild will be three in January. Alas, I'm too old to
live to see any great-grandchildren[*]. The end of an era. :^|

[*] My mother was 93 when her first great-grandchild was born. In the church
she attended, they made a big fuss over great-grandmothers on Mother's Day,
and she hated not being included. She used to hector my wife and me ("WHEN AM
I GOING TO BE A GREAT-GRANDMOTHER??"), as though we had any choice in the
matter. In the end, she almost made 98 and did see two of her current seven.

Who gives a hoot about an over powering flower? The girl is content,
peaceful, and adorable. I have friends with kids. I doubt they would like
their kids pics on web sites. But, I could be mistaken.

chuckle! I also have two grandsons. Alas, my son isn't keen on having
pictures of his son and daughter posted. My daughter, a better child
photographer with her P&S than I am with my 400D and five lenses, has a Web
site for her three. ;^)

She looks a bit like one of my neices. Very nice pic. Gentle, peaceful, and

If you do look at the flower, it looks like there are two eyes in
flower looking back at the child.

That sounds very final Bob. How many children have you? My father (God rest
his soul) died on Father's Day, nine years ago. He left 106 direct
descendants! He had 68 grandchildren and thirteen of us. I have nine
brothers and three sisters. It's like a regular little dynasty. One of my
brothers is home from Toronto for a few weeks and we are having a bit of a
get together tonight. Here's a pic of all of us, taken in 1968, before my
brother Jim left Ireland to go teach in Africa.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3066/...914f8e55_b.jpg

And think about this. In 1955 my mother gave birth to triplets!
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3200/...2ed0c3ea_b.jpg A fairly
unusual enough thing in those days. I was a year old at the time, my brother
Brendan was two and my brother Martin was three! So, my dear old departed Ma
had six children to cope with...............all under the age of four!
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3260/...0fb0b7a6_o.jpg

My mother's sister also had triplets but sadly they all died shortly after
birth. And my mother's niece also had triplets and they all survived and are
now in their mid-40's. There have been no multiple births in the family
since. The 106 descendents were all single births and my Da outlived every
one of his descendents which, when you consider the number of them, and
consider that they all lived through 30 years of "war" here in the north of
Ireland, is a pretty amazing fact. Mind you, his first great-grandchild,
Clare, was blinded in the worst bomb of our history here (the Omagh bomb) in
1998. Ironically, that bomb happened in "peacetime" and was set off by
renegade Republicans who were trying to derail the Peace Process at that
time. So there ye are Bob.............a bit of my history!

The only excuse for posting pictures on this site is to have them

Read the charter if you doubt that. As Harry Truman was fond of

Your picture is technically excellent. I'd be insulting your
intelligence to
say otherwise. As for the composition, stare at it for five minutes
and then
try to tell me you couldn't have done better.

He posted another grandbaby pic a week or 2 ago and this one is much
improved. That one was cute but it had clear flaws, this one is very
good. Maybe not extraordinarily exceptional but heck, I'd be proud of it.

To me the color is very weird, too saturated but probably shifted as
well. And the wall in the background is blown out.

A great family shot. Nobody has a bad expression. Which one is you? Were you
wielding the air release, or did an uncle or cousin take the picture?

Well, I have two children: a son who will be 41 next month (his wife is three
years older) and a daughter who's 39. My son has two children, and my daughter
is very lucky to have three. After several miscarriages and ectopic
pregnancies, she lost her first two viable babies (identical twin boys) at
about 20 weeks. Modern medical procedures took over at that point, and she now
has two beautiful (we think!) daughters and a 2-year-old son who's a certified
menace. Example: A year ago, when he was about 18 months old, my daughter took
him into a caterer's shop; by the time she had finished ordering a cake, he
had re-programmed the air conditioning system and disabled the ice cream
freezer! (You can look in on this gang at www.chezpoor.com.)

So that's it for us, I'm afraid. My daughter, all of whose pregnancies were
officially designated "high risk", has been told that any more would be
dangerous, and my son and daughter-in-law would hardly try for another at
their age. But all five kids are attractive and smart and great subjects for
photo shoots!

You have to be relieved that your large extended family is growing up in an
Ireland that has changed so much for the better in recent years. It saddens me
that my country is mired in what is arguably the third worst period in its
history, with little chance of breaking out of it in the foreseeable future.
Once large numbers of Irish came the the U.S. to seek (and find) a better
life. Their descendants are starting to return to Ireland, now that prospects
are so much better there than here. The Irish came here because of natural
events beyond their control. We did it all to ourselves by turning our fate
over to the greediest and sleaziest element of our population. It's an old
slogan, but a country gets the government it deserves. :^|

You certainly have beautiful grandchildren Bob. Pity your daughter lost her
twins. My wife had two miscarriages years ago but she often thinks about
what might have been. We used to do some counselling with recovering
alcoholics and drug-addicts. This also included their non addict partners. I
always will remember one gruelling session when the subject of miscarriage
came up and four women in the group had experienced this. It was an
eye-opener for me because I never really considered the depth of grief that
this creates in an expectant mother. I remember I was going through a bout
of depression years ago and went to my works doctor for consultancy. He
asked if there was anything going on in my life that could be making me feel
depressed and I mentioned that my wife had recently had a miscarriage and he
told me to get a grip, sure that wasn't any kind of big deal for a man after
all! I accepted this then but it took a number of years before I realised
that he was so lacking in understanding that he could minimise something
like this. It is a death of a family member when you get right down to it!
Anyway, thanks for sharing your family photos and give your daughter my best
regards................even though she has no idea that I even exist. I
could add something to this but it might come across as crazy. About a seer
that my sister in law visited recently. Some of the stuff she told her was
incredibly accurate and very thought provoking.
