If I am at P1370264 in my camera, that means that I have taken 370 thousand
images! That seems a lot. My new camera starts at 1000000 so presumably I am
correct

The numbers refer to storage directories on the card, not on the camera
and will follow the DCF specifications.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Design_...ra_File_system

The first three digits starting at 100 are for directories - 100,101,137 etc.

Some cameras may open a new directory for each new date a photo is taken
although this may be optional. Others may open a new directory when a maximum
no of photos has been reached maybe 1000.

More like 37 thousands (your camera will jump from 1370999 to 1380001).
Actually since there are no pictures numbered "000", you have taken
(36*999)+264=36228 pictures.

Time to find out how to disable the "burst shooting" mode :-)
