Default "almost DSLR"

I was in the same boat as you about six months ago.
My solution was to get a Pentax *ist-DS, but that was only because I
already had a Tamron 28-200mm Adaptall lens that I could use on it
(from my film SLR).
If I was starting from scratch, my first choice would have been a
KonicaMinolta A2 and my second choice would have been a Panasonic FZ20.
The latest entry level DSLR cameras from KM (Dynax 5D) and Oly (E-500)
look very tempting as well, if I hadn't gone with Pentax already.

If KM hadn't replaced my dead Dimage 7i (with an A200), I would have
bought a Panasonic FZ5 so I could have a nice small camera to take that
has decent optics when I don't feel like lugging the DSLR around.
