What's the D300's "Close-up mode" for?
Hi,
I've had my Digital Rebel for...three and a half days now, and I'm quite confident with it now. I've got all the controls and modes and everything figured out (I think), except for the close-up mode. What does this do that makes it special for close-up shots? Close-up shots done in any of the other modes (such as Program mode) turn out just fine. I do most of my shooting in the creative modes, but I'm wondering if there's something that "close-up" mode does that I can't select manually (like the AI Servo focus that sport mode does). - Darryl |

If I recall its sets a small apature so you can get maximum depth of
field. There are no functions in the creative zones that you can't do in other modes on the camera. Well, in the interests of accuracy, sports mode is not in the creative zone, it's in the basic zone AI servo focus only exists in sports mode: see the features table at http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos300d/page6.asp From the same table, partial metering exists in the creative zones, but not the basic zones. This is one of my few minor complaints about the camera so far: sometimes you have to fiddle with it to get the combination of features you want for a given shot (and a couple combinations, like CW average metering and One-shot autofocus, are totally impossible). This is my first SLR, so for all I know most cameras have these sort of restrictions, but I still find it -slightly- irritating. In most situations, using one of the built-in modes is convenient. I just wish they were a little more customizable. That said, I also realize I'm using a bottom-of-the-line DSLR, so I won't complain too loudly - Darryl |
