Default Layering in Photoshop

I want to take numerous astrophotos with my Canon 10D on a tripod and then
layer them in photoshop so that I can better see the cosmos. Has anybody
done this successfully? Lens ideas, exposure times?

Instead of photoshop a better tool would be something like Iris.
