We drive on the correct side you lot just followed the Napolonic
French, something to do with which side you drew your swords on, that's
before you were all handed guns at birth obviously ;-P

France used to drive on the left side. Napoleon changed that to humour
the Germans, transit traffic to Russia 'n all that! If you've seen
"One Bridge Too Far" you'd have a better understanding of the problems
involved...

where did you get that from sounds rubbish to me. Before Napoleon
people didn't drive. So I really don't know when France drove on the
left, care to explain ?

It was to do with most people being right handed, so for fighting with
your right hand needed traveling on the left hand side.

So you think that the French trops used sherpas to get stuff to the
Russian front?

nothing to do with a bridge to far, it was hundreds of years before.

Sadly, Monty wasn't the only General who sacrificed troops to satisfy
his ego. In the past he had been rather careful and conservative. I have
often wondered whether he had bad intelligence, or ignored the reports.

I know that there are people in this with first hand experience, that
I don't have that could confirm that things can happen and change very
fast in a war zone and that sometimes you just got to stick with what
you think is right and your gutfeeling.

True. I also understand that in those days, sudden troop movements were
not always easy to spot. But to my way of thinking the condition, and
location of the roads is basic information that one should know, prior
to moving tanks. I also cannot understand why no attempt was made to
secure the bridges on the the planned route.

There is clear evidence that he was told all about it at least two
weeks before the landing. I can look up the references (real books -
made of paper) if you like.
