Thanks.

Would 3TB Time Capsule be a reasonable solution for such
storage/retrieval situations? Thanks.
Ed

Not really. Apple's Time Machine/Time Capsule, software/hardware is a
good solution for maintaining a back up, but does not make a great
archive/back up for assets such as images. The TC would save those
image files, but makes for lousy archival access.
The problem becomes apparent when trying to make a full Time
Machine/Time Capsule restoration, or rebuild of 3-4TB of data to a 1TB
MBP HDD.

It would be best to consider a two fold solution to meet Don's needs.
1: A 2-3TB Time Machine/Time Capsule, or RAID of similar capacity to
ensure back up of the computer.
....and,
2: A 4-8TB RAID of the Buffalo Tech type or similar. Other World
Computing have some pretty good options at reasonable prices. They also
have pretty good customer support. I have been using their drives for
years.

Another option would be to use a bigger RAID, say 6-12 TB with a Time
Machine partition, and an archive partition.

Then one should make some serious decisions on just how to retain
current files on the computer, and what data should start life in the
archive, and what data should be backed up via TM/TC

that post is from 4 months ago, but aside from that, a time capsule
would work but its not the best solution.

a directly attached external drive or a nas would be fine and a lot
less expensive.

a time capsule is ideal if you need both a router and time machine
archiving. it can be a nas but that's a secondary feature.

a time capsule can be a nas, but that's not its intended purpose.

not if you use it as a nas.
