Default dvd data failure

Possibly, but, personally, there are too many "mights" there to base
anything on.
:-)

You're taking too narrow a view. This happens to be one of those
cases where might makes right! g

Apart from the comments above, also try different dvd drives. I
recently replaced my drive, and found it could read a couple of dvds I
had previously given up on.

True but you also haven't seen any studies that say it doesn't. I personally
don't think consumer burned DVDs are worth a ****. While they claim to have
standards for controlling their format and so on it seems that DVD is much
more iffy. Some player will play some but not others. Some discs work better
in some players than others, etc. It would seem to me that if their really
was a standard for the various formats and if the hardware and disc makers
and software makers were following those standards as they should then what
works in one would work in the others with no problems and that IS NOT the
case. I think we have flavors of DVD just like we have flavors of TIFF
files.

I also don't think that anyone in the industry wants media that will last.
They don't make money of a discs lasts 50 years. They do when it goes bad
and you have to buy more and this holds even more true of Hollywood and
movie DVDs. Their is no incentive to make things last for 50 years. This is
also true of printer makers. They make more money if you have to do reprints
every few years instead once a century. Just another reason I don't trust
the faked print life tests.

No, a DVD isn't more delicate than a CD. On the burning side,
it has the same protective layer that a CD has, with the added
protection of another layer on the label side.

However, due to the higher data density, wouldn't it be logical that a
DVD is more susceptible to optically induced failure caused by
scratches?

Possibly, but I've seen no studies that have shown that.

Plus the dyes are pretty junk. Many fail within weeks, even the best
ones need to be kept in a cool dark place if they are to last more than
a couple of years.
