Default Hot Shoe question

I was just given a Nikon SB80 flash unit. I know it won't work in Auto with my
Nikon D70, so would like to use it as a remote slave flash.

My question concerns mounting. I'll have to machine a receiver to mount the
flash, but I don't know if the hot shoe electrical connections would have a
problem with a metal holder. I can, if necessary, machine the holder out of
HDPE (High Density Polyethelyne).

Any suggestions?

The metal can cause problems. I cut an old piece of film (remember
that stuff) and glued it into some remote flash holders to insulate
the contacts from the metal.

Thanks, that is what I suspected, but just needed some verification.
