D60: LARGER THAN LIFE !!!

A difficult shot to do, but it is overexposed and a little bit out of

The focus leeway is in millimetres. A really steady hand is essential. A
shot like that could be done with a tripod and a focussing rail.

That would be ideal if I didn't have to stand in a chair and lean out over a
bush. I could've used a monopod for the first shot, however, but the results
would've been the same.

I assume you used TTL flash. The problem is that it sees the background
and attempts to expose for that, with the consequence that the
foreground is overexposed. It also makes a daylight scene look like
night.It is because you are too close.

No, it is because the shots were taken at night. I agree the lighting is a bit
harsh, even with my diffuser attached. Perhaps bounced flash or multiple
strobes might have softened it up a bit. I'm sure I'll get another chance as
these critters are fairly predictable. Except for the first guy who met an
unfortunate demise after eating that bug.
