Default Need help from Canon 300mm f2.8 users/experts

OK, I'm in a pickle and I need some information from knowledgable Canon users.
Here's the deal:

I sold a bunch of camera equipment for the sister of a woman at work. This
lady's husband died and left all this gear behind. One of the items was a Canon
300mm f2.8 EF lens for the EOS autofocus cameras. This is the older non-IS
lens.

I noticed that as I was shooting photos of the equipment to post on eBay that
the lens hood fit sort of loosely. It just pressed onto the front of the lens
with no thumb screw to hold it in place. Kind of a cheap way of doing things I
thought. But, still it looked like a factory hood. It had rubber trim at the
front and, as I recall, a ribbed interior.

Anyway, I sell the lens and ship it to a guy half way around the world. Now he
says the hood is a homemade hood. I told him that if that's really true I'd try
to make it right somehow (either let him return it for a refund, buy him a
replacement or give him some cash).

Anyway, I called Canon and, sure enough, no hoods are available. But they told
me the part number is ET-188 VERSION TWO.

I got to thinking, I would recognize a homemade hood if I saw one. I've been
handling high-end camera equipment for years. I used to work in camera shops
and I've been a pro shooter, using Nikon gear though, for about 20 years.
Surely I wasn't fooled by some homemade PVC replacement!

So, my question is this: Do any of you Canon experts/shooters/old timers
remember what VERSION ONE of the 300mm f2.8 hood was like. Did they ever sell a
hood that just slipped on the end of the lens?

If it helps, here's a link to the auction photos:
