Mesa, AZ?
I'm considering a trip to Mesa, AZ to visit a friend, and was
wondering what is there to photograph and when are the best times to visit? Thanks, Art |

Worst time is probably mid-May to mid-Sept when it's very hot. Probably the absolute best time is Feb or March in years when there's a heavy fall rain, leading to massive fields of wildflowers, especially Mexican poppies. Also in March several major league baseball teams are here for spring training, if that's of interest. For places to go, half an hour east of Mesa accesses the Superstition Wilderness area, with plenty of hiking trails and beautiful desert scenery. Or you can do a day trip all the way around this area past Roosevelt Lake. If you like birds the Gilbert Water Ranch is within minues of Mesa ... it's mainly water storage ponds in an urban setting but plenty of birds and free. Another good place for birds is the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix. If you want to drive two hours you can reach the Saguaro National Park units near Tucson (south) or Sedona to the north for red rock views. Grand Canyon NP is about 4 hours to the north. Organ Pipe National Monument is about 2 1/2 hours west and then south, on the Mexican border. Best in spring. Another 90 minues gets you to Rocky Point, Mexico, Arizona's favorite beach. |
