Qualcomm announced Snapdragon 865 + mandatory X55 5G modem, with 40% better
camera pipeline performance for 2020 flagship mobile devices with graphics
drivers available on Google Play.

There is so much variant new & interesting DETAIL in this Qualcomm
announcement that it's hard to succinctly summarize it all!

Based on my read of those articles, here's a handful of key takeaways...

1. Qualcomm announces the new 25% faster 8-core large-core Snapdragon 865
as a direct successor to the Snapdragon 855, where the 865 is expected to
power most of the 2020 flagship Android cellphones.

2. New also is the launch of the Snapdragon 765 and 765G SoCs at a lower
performance level & price.

3. While the Snapdragon 765 has an integrated modem, the surprise this year
was that the Snapdragon 865 does NOT have an integrated modem (in part due
to 5G design & multiple vendor's development cycle complexity, they said).

4. The plan is for the many OEM vendors to first use the X55 modem in their
development cycle, assuming the X55+S855 platform, focusing on getting the
RF subsystems right, and then once the S865 becomes available, it would be
a rather simple integration to that Snapdragon 865 platform, without OEM
vendors having to do much by way of changes to the connectivity components
of the new device design.

5. This separate TSMC 7nm N7P process node X55 modem chip is exclusively
tied to the Snapdragon 865 SoC, where Qualcomm won't support a 4G
integration with the 865 platform in 2020.

6. For the r.p.d newsgroup, Camera performance has been improved on the
865's new Spectra 480 image signal processor (ISP). The camera co-processor
now has a max processing bandwidth of 2 gigapixels per second, allowing for
cameras up to 200MP, and video capture modes of 8K at 30fps or 4K at
120fps. High speed is still capped at 960fps at 720P, but you'll be able to
record that speed indefinitely now, instead of only in short busts.
Overall, Qualcomm is promising 40 percent better performance out of the
camera pipeline.

7. New this year, Qualcomm will provide Snapdragon 865 graphics driver
updates through the Play Store, allowing users to update their graphics
drivers just as they would an app (much like the WinTel ecosystem today).

8. Qualcomm also announced that the 865 will be one of the first chips to
support Google's new digital driver's license scheme, aka the Android
"IdentityCredential APIs" coming in "Android R" (the 2020 version of
Android). The idea is that instead of lugging around a dumb plastic card,
you could carry state and federally recognized ID in your smartphone as
just another app.

9. This last item I'll just quote verbatim as it depends on what you need:
"Qualcomm is requiring any Snapdragon 865 customers to also
include a Snapdragon X55 Modem in their phone designs, and at
the bare minimum, Qualcomm is allowing vendors to do, that would
give you access to sub-6GHz 5G, but not mmWave 5G. The penetration
of mmWave is so poor that your hand can block the signal, so the
industry solution is to place multiple antennas around the phone body,
increasing the power usage, complexity, cost, and size of the phone.
This mmWave step is still optional, so get ready to see a bunch of
"5G" phones that support sub-6GHz but not mmWave."
