Default ISO Noise

Real situation test/question:

I'm in a Gym at a cheer competition (rah rah rah) with my Digital
Rebel XT and my 70-300 IS USM. To reduce the blur i inch up the
shutter to 160. Of course too dark, therefore on my current camera I
increase the ISO 1600 max. While taking pictures I say, "cool, enough
light and not too blurry". When I put them on computer....snow/noise
is very pronounced...bad enough that in my view not acceptable for
prints.

I have read numerous times....."ALL else being equal -- increase the
megapixs on same sensor then noise will be worse."

Canon 50D --- same sensor as XT but 15 versus 8.....so in my view
"All else being equal" the new expensive 50D would be worse at 1600
ISO than my current XT....

QUESTION:.......has the technology improved in regard to noise to
overcome this "All else being equal" issue.........would the 50D
actually be worse for low light shooting at 1600 so I can have enough
light and be not too blurry?
Because I'm thinking there has to be "something" that would make the
50D better than my old XT in regards to ISO noise.

Back to real situation/real life......would the 50D have better IQ
than the XT in low level light with action (in gym with flipping
cheerleaders).

Probably yes.
But use flash, not straight on.
